SINNOTT Family History
This most interesting name with variant spellings Sinnott, Sinnat, Senett, Sinnett, and Synnot, although found in England, and of English origin, is far more widespread in Ireland, where it has been Gaelicized as "Sionoid". The name itself derives from the Olde English personal name "Sigenoth" and the medieval personal name "Sinod", which means "victory-brave" from the elements "sige", victory and "noth", brave. The personal name appears as "Synodus" circa 1095 in Feudal Documents from the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk). The name has been prominent in Co. Wexford since the 13th Century (see below). They have often been referred to as the most numerous of Anglo-Norman families in Wexford after the Invasion of 1170 and until the advent of Cromwell possessed extensive estates and held important public offices due to their constant loyalty to the Crown...Select Audience

My 6th great-grandfather was Michael Sinnett, born in Wexford, Ireland (I am unsure if that was the town or just the County itself.) He had finished his apprenticeship as a glovemaker and, along with a couple of friends, went to Dublin for a quick holiday. They were offered a tour of one of the ships, but when they came back up on deck, it was to find the ship was already set sail. They arrived in Boston and were sold as indentured servants to pay for their passage. He served in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, and died in 1798 in Orrs Island, Maine. I have records of his family since coming to America, but his parents - as well as anyone else that came before him - has been a dead end as yet. There has been some speculation that the spelling of his name, "Sinnett" may be a variation of the name he'd had, possibly "Sinnott" or something similar. It is unknown if he had any contact with his family in Ireland since his coming to America, or if he just "disappeared" and they never knew what happened to him.

My 5th great-grandfather, Patrick Sinnett, He was born in Ireland, 17 March 1752. emigrated to North America in 1773. He was an indentured servant to a Cozad. He settled in Rockingham County, Virginia (now Pendleton County) until about 1815, then moved to Wood County, Virginia. While in Pendleton County, he married Catherine Hevener 1 May,1783. He fought in Lord Dunmore's War, commanded by Captain John Skidmore and was at the battle of Points Pleasant against Cornstalk and his indians. He was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War, serving as a Private. He died 19 December 1850 in Ritchie County (West) Virginia. We have no Sinnett family knowledge past Patrick Sinnett. ?
