ROSSITER Family History
This interesting and unusual name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a dialectal variant of Rochester, a locational name from places so called in either Kent or Northumberland. The place in Kent appears originally in the Saxon Charters of 445 as "Dorobrevi", from the British (pre-Roman), "duro" a stronghold, with "briva", a bridge, and later, circa 700, it was recorded in the Anglo Saxon Laws as "Hrofesceaster", or as "Hrofi", circa 730, in Bede's Ecclesiastical History; both deriving from the Olde English pre 7th Century "hrof", roof, with "ceaster", city or walled town. The derivation of the place in Northumberland is possibly the Olde English "hroc", rook, appearing in the Fees of 1242 as "Rucestr"; hence, "the city of rooks"...Select Audience

Eileen Shannon
Hi there!
I happened to have come across this website during a research of my family roots. My great grandmother happens to be Katherine Rossiter, daughter of a ship's captain in Wexford, then married to a man from Kilkenny and took his last name, Dooley. She may have lived through the late 1800s up to the 1960s. I am interested in finding out more about this branch of my family tree, perhaps we could be connected in some way? Who knows. Hit me up if you get this message!
Cheers,
Eileen Shannon

I am trying to connect info about William Rossiter -b 1781-1865 Ireland- and Martha Green, they married in 1810 in Diocese of Ossory. (I have Index married but Iยดdonโt have the married certificade) I looking for info about William parents and info of Marthaยดs parents too. Their son James Rossiter (born 1815 Wexford) married (1840) with Ellen or Ellenor Sinnott daughter of Thomas Sinnott and Mary Bent (she was b.1780 d.1860 Wexford,Co Ireland, Ballybrennan Cemetery). They settled in Argentina in 1866 with their sons and daugthers. The eldest son was William Rossiter. He was born in Wexford, 1841 . He was my g.grandfather.
appreciate any info about William Rossiter, Martha Green, Mary Bent and Thomas Sinnottยดs parents. Andres Rossiter
